Northern Cyprus Secures €480 Million Boost: A New Era of Infrastructure and Development Dawns

In a significant move poised to reshape the landscape and future of Northern Cyprus, Turkish Cypriot leader Ünal Üstel and Turkish Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek recently inked a new €480 million financial protocol between Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and Turkey. This substantial agreement, finalized in early April 2026, is dedicated to funding critical infrastructure and development projects, with the ambitious goal of positioning the TRNC as a ‘shining star in the eastern Mediterranean.’

Building on the successful implementation of last year’s protocol, which saw 89% utilization of an allocated 21 billion Turkish Lira (TL) – an increase from an initial 16 billion TL – this new financial injection signals a robust commitment to the TRNC’s progress. The comprehensive plan targets key sectors, including healthcare, technology, and road infrastructure, alongside support for new economic schemes.

Revolutionizing Healthcare Infrastructure

The healthcare sector is set to receive a much-needed overhaul, with several significant projects nearing completion or commencing soon. The long-anticipated new Morphou hospital, despite prior delays from promises made in 2024 and 2025, is now slated for completion by the end of April 2026. This facility is expected to significantly enhance medical services in the region.

Further expanding healthcare accessibility, a brand-new hospital in the Karpas peninsula village of Tavros is scheduled to open its doors on November 15, 2026. This date holds particular significance, marking the 43rd anniversary of the TRNC’s unilateral declaration of independence. In addition to these new constructions, extensive renovation work at existing health facilities across Northern Cyprus is also set to begin in the near future, promising improved patient care and modern amenities.

Pioneering an ‘Information Technology Island’

Northern Cyprus is making strides towards becoming an ‘information technology island’ with ambitious plans for fibre optic internet installation across the entire territory. This initiative aims to significantly upgrade the TRNC’s digital infrastructure, promising faster and more reliable internet connectivity for residents and businesses alike. However, the project has not been without its challenges, facing controversy due to exclusive rights granted to Turk Telekom and reported costs exceeding four times the original forecast.

Extensive Road Network Upgrades

Road infrastructure is another major beneficiary of the new protocol, with plans to resurface an impressive 822 kilometres of roads. This extensive undertaking will improve connectivity and travel conditions across Northern Cyprus, benefiting both residents and visitors. Key routes targeted for resurfacing include:

• The scenic Rizokarpaso to Apostolos Andreas monastery route, vital for tourism and local communities.
• The ‘mountain road’ linking the bustling city of Kyrenia with Kythrea, a crucial artery for daily commuters.
• The road between Livera and Orga villages in the northwest, enhancing access for rural communities.

These improvements are expected to significantly reduce travel times, enhance safety, and support economic activity in the regions they serve.

Supporting New Economic Schemes

Beyond the major infrastructure projects, the financial protocol also allocates 800 million TL (€15 million) in loans to support new schemes. This funding is designed to stimulate economic growth, encourage innovation, and diversify the TRNC’s economic landscape, creating opportunities across various sectors.

This €480 million financial protocol marks a pivotal moment for Northern Cyprus. With a clear focus on enhancing healthcare, modernizing digital infrastructure, and upgrading road networks, the TRNC is firmly on a path towards significant development and improved quality of life for its citizens.
