Remote Work in Northern Cyprus: A Practical Guide (2026)
Northern Cyprus attracts remote workers with its climate, coastline and lower costs than much of Western Europe. This guide sets out the practical points to check before you move. An earlier version made claims about visas, tax, coworking spaces and costs that we could not verify. We have removed them.

Visas and permits
As of October 2026, we found no official TRNC permit designed for digital nomads. The Republic of Cyprus runs its own Digital Nomad Visa scheme, but it applies to the internationally recognised south and does not cover living in the north. Foreigners who stay long term in the north do so under a TRNC residence permit. The permit types and requirements change, and some depend on your circumstances. Confirm the current rules with the official immigration authority or a licensed TRNC lawyer before you plan around a particular route.
Tax
Where you pay tax as a remote worker depends on your citizenship, your home country’s rules, how long you spend in each country and how your income is structured. Moving to Northern Cyprus does not by itself change your tax position. Get advice from a tax adviser who knows both your home country and the north. We do not give tax advice.
Internet
Fixed and mobile internet are available in the towns. Speeds and reliability vary by street and building, so ask a landlord for a recent speed test, or test it yourself on a viewing. Broadband is changing. In 2026 the legislature ratified a deal giving Türk Telekom exclusive rights to roll out fibre, and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman referred it to the courts over the lack of a tender. Check what is actually installed at an address rather than what is planned.

Getting there and away
Ercan airport is the north’s main airport. Because the TRNC is recognised only by Turkey, international flights to Ercan operate via Turkey. Many residents also fly from Larnaca in the south and cross at a Green Line checkpoint. Factor this into your travel time and costs if you need to travel often for work.
Costs
Day-to-day prices are in Turkish lira, and inflation was 38.46% in the year to June 2026 according to the TRNC Central Bank. Rents and property prices are often quoted in GBP or EUR. See our cost of living guide for the latest official figures and how to budget.
Other things to check
- Payments and online services: some international apps and payment services restrict accounts or features in the north. Test the services you depend on before you commit.
- Health cover: UK GHIC and EU EHIC cards are not valid in the north. See our healthcare guide.
- Workspace: coworking options change often. Search current listings and visit before signing up.
